Alcohol Awareness Week Focuses on Campus Dialogue, Support Services
Emory University will commemorate National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week (NCAAW) with a series of events through Oct. 30 that aim to sustain a community of care and open dialogue regarding alcohol use and dependence.
Events include: a town hall forum Oct. 23 with former Middlebury College president and Amethyst Initiative founder John McCardell, Emory students and administrators; and a panel discussion on Emory's approach to high-risk alcohol use with Emory President James Wagner, Provost Earl Lewis and other university leaders Oct. 30.
NCAAW is a collaborative initiative between Emory's Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS) and the Faculty Staff Assistance Program (FSAP), with co-sponsorships from Emory's Campus Life division, Student Government Association, Emory College Council, Faculty Council and others. Meet and Greet with SHCS and FSAP Clinicians
Wednesday, Oct. 22, 12 p.m. – 1:30 p.m., Asbury Circle during Wonderful Wednesdays
Enjoy a complementary dessert bar along Asbury Circle while meeting clinicians from Student Health & Counseling Services and the Faculty Staff Assistance Program.
Amethyst Initiative Town Hall Forum
Thursday, Oct. 23, 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m., Tull Auditorium, School of Law, 1301 Clifton Road
The Amethyst Initiative was launched in July 2008 with the stated goal to "support an informed and dispassionate public debate over the effects of the 21 year-old drinking age" and "invite new ideas about the best ways to prepare young adults to make responsible decisions about alcohol." The forum features an evening of engaged dialogue about the initiative. Panelists include:
- John McCardell, founder of Choose Responsibility and the Amethyst Initiative
- Claire Coles, professor, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
- Tim Downes, director of athletics and recreation
- Andy Wilson, assistant dean and director of residence life
- Tye Tavaras and Daniyal Inamullah, Emory students
Sustaining a Community of Care: Emory's Leaders Respond to High Risk Alcohol Use
Thursday, Oct. 30, 3:30 p.m. – 5 p.m., Goizueta Business School, Room GB130, 1300 Clifton Road
Emory President James Wagner and Provost Earl Lewis, other leaders from faculty, staff and student organizations, and Paul Earley, a nationally recognized addictionologist, will take part in a panel discussion on how Emory is working to create a healthy campus approach to alcohol use.
