Falcons Name Karas New Team Doctor

Spero Karas, MD, orthopedic surgeon at the Emory Sports Medicine Center, has been named Head Team Physician for the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons. Karas will serve as team orthopedic surgeon and oversee the orthopedic and medical care for the Falcons’ athletes and coaches. Jeffrey Webb, MD, sports medicine primary care specialist at Emory, joins Karas as consulting physician for the team.

About Karas

Karas is currently an associate professor in the Department of Orthopedics at Emory University School of Medicine, and directs the Emory Orthopedic Sports Medicine Fellowship Program. He serves as the orthopedic surgeon for Georgia Tech baseball and consulting team physician for Georgia Tech University, Emory University, Oglethorpe University and Perimeter College athletics.

A native of Indiana, Karas received his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame, his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine and completed his orthopedic residency at Duke University Medical Center.

He completed a Shoulder, Knee, and Sports Medicine Fellowship at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colorado. He then served as chief of the Shoulder Service, varsity team physician, and director of the Orthopedic Sports Medicine Fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Karas is dual-certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery in both orthopedic surgery and sports medicine. He belongs to numerous prestigious medical organizations, including the NFL Physicians Society, the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, and the American Orthopaedic Association. He has served on numerous committee positions within these national organizations.

Atlanta Magazine has named Karas “Atlanta’s Most Trusted Sports Medicine Specialist” for each of the last four years.  He has been recognized as one of America’s “Top Orthopedic Doctors” in Men’s Health magazine, and “Top Sports Medicine Specialists for Women” in Women’s Health magazine. 

About Webb

Webb is an assistant professor of Orthopedics and began practicing at Emory in 2009 after completing a Fellowship in Primary Care Sports Medicine at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, Alabama. He is board certified in pediatrics and sports medicine.

Webb sees patients of all ages and abilities with musculoskeletal problems, and specializes in the care of pediatric, adolescent, and adult sports medicine conditions. He has provided medical coverage for a variety of athletics including Division I college football and other sports, high school athletics, marathons, international track and field events, and the Special Olympics. His research and clinical interests include concussion screening and treatment, and ballet and other dance-related injuries.

He serves as team physician for Decatur high school and several other high schools in the Atlanta area. He also is a consulting physician for the Atlanta Dekalb International Olympic Training Center, Emory University, Oglethorpe University, Georgia Perimeter College and the Atlanta Xplosion women's contact football team.

Webb is currently active in the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine and the American Academy of Pediatrics professional societies and has given numerous lectures at national conferences.
