Emory University Statement on Dr. Sanjay Gupta as U.S. Surgeon General

Fred Sanfilippo, MD, PhD
Executive Vice President for Health Affairs
Emory University

"In learning about news reports today that Emory University neurosurgeon and CNN chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta, has been offered the job of Surgeon General of the United States, I would support his nomination to help this country by becoming its chief health educator."

"In fact, that is what he does now, in practicing neurosurgery as an Emory doctor at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, as well as informing the world about health at CNN.  He has the character, training, intelligence and communications skills needed to help the United States improve its health and health care delivery systems in the next Administration."

Gupta is an assistant professor of neurosurgery at Emory University School of Medicine and serves as neurosurgeon at Emory University Hospital and Grady Memorial Hospital, where he serves as associate chief of neurosurgery.

Before coming to Emory in 2001 and joining CNN, Gupta was a fellow in neurosurgery at the University of Tennessee's Semmes-Murphy clinic, and before that, the University of Michigan Medical Center.
