Emory Awarded $2.9 Million NIH Grant for Global AIDS Research Training

The Fogarty International Center of the National Institutes of Health has awarded the Emory AIDS International Training and Research Program (AITRP) $2.94 million in a five-year grant renewal, Emory University researchers announced today.

The new award marks the second time Emory has successfully competed for AITRP funding. The grant will be used to continue Emory's training of HIV/AIDS researchers in low- and middle-income countries around the globe.

The funds are awarded under the Fogarty Center's 20-year-old signature AIDS International Training and Research Program, which has trained nearly 2,000 foreign researchers, most of whom have remained in their countries where they conduct important research, care for patients, and train the next generation of scientists.

Emory investigators and their collaborators have established HIV/AIDS research training programs in Mexico, Georgia, Vietnam, Rwanda and Zambia to build capacity that allows trainees to become involved in research as well as in the evaluation of a variety of interventions in their countries, including those supported through the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief.

"The Emory AITRP has had tremendous success in helping to build research capacity in our collaborating countries," says Emory AITRP principal investigator and program director Carlos del Rio, MD. del Rio is also chair of the Hubert Department of Global Health at Emory's Rollins School of Public Health.

"We will continue to help train the next generation of HIV/AIDS investigators by collaborating with schools of public health in Mexico and the Republic of Georgia," del Rio adds.

In addition to del Rio's leadership of the Emory AITRP, Susan Allen, MD, MPH, serves as associate director and directs the Rwanda-Zambia HIV Research Group.
