Emory Radiation Oncologist Earns Army Achievement Medal

Jonathan Beitler, MD, recently earned the Army Achievement Medal while serving on active duty at Fort Rucker, Ala., headquarters for Army Aviation.

Beitler, who is a professor in the Emory Radiation Oncology Department, with secondary appointments in Otolaryngology and Medical Oncology, specializes in the treatment of cancers of the head and neck, breast and lung as well as the use of brachytherapy. He joined the US Army Reserves as a Lieutenant in 1983 and continues to serve as a flight surgeon with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

During Beitler’s recent tour of duty at Ft. Rucker, he provided medical consultation and evaluation in three aircraft mishaps. In addition, he devised a system to help reduce delays in getting pilots medically certified for flight.

The Army Achievement Medal is awarded to any member of the Armed Forces of the United States, or to any member of the Armed Forces of a friendly foreign nation, who while serving in any capacity with the Army in a noncombat area distinguished himself or herself by meritorious service or achievement of a lesser degree than required for award of the Army Commendation Medal.

Beitler is a graduate of Medical College of Pennsylvania. He received three years of general surgery training at Downstate Medical Center in New York and received his radiation oncology training at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.
