Imaging Technology News has named Emory's Department of Radiation Oncology to its "Top Five Radiation Therapy Centers to Watch in 2009" listing. This review recognizes the most forward-thinking, US-based cancer treatment centers that have adopted advanced technology to optimize treatment and make a difference in patient care.

"This is a wonderful achievement by Emory’s Radiation Oncology Department," says Walter Curran, MD, chair of the department and chief medical officer of the Emory Winship Cancer Institute. "We believe strongly in the value to our patients of innovation and a dedication to multidisciplinary care."

The article noted that Emory’s Department of Radiation Oncology was chosen for its achievement in innovation, operational efficiency, patient service and teamwork.

Among the highlights:

  • The Department of Radiation Oncology at The Emory Clinic has linear accelerators equipped with multileaf collimation, electronic portal imaging and quality control software to avoid treatment errors.
  • Emory’s Radiation Oncology Department was the first facility in North America to install Varian Medical Systems’ On-Board Imager (OBI) device for delivering Image Guided Radiation Therapy.
  • Emory University Hospital recently earned a commendation from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC). Only one in four hospitals that treat cancer patients receives this commendation.
