Health Sciences Communications Names New Assistant Vice President, Executive Director of Media Relations

Joseph L. Quimby has been appointed assistant vice president for health sciences communications and executive director of media relations in Emory University’s Woodruff Health Sciences Center. The appointment is effective Dec. 1, 2010.

Quimby most recently served as a senior press officer at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, and previously with Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company, Marietta, Ga., as a senior manager of communications for F-22 stealth fighter program communications.

A career journalist and public affairs officer in the U.S. Navy, Quimby completed military service in 2000 with the rank of commander.

“Emory’s Woodruff Health Sciences Center is pleased to benefit from Joe’s 20+ years of strategic and tactical communications experience as we work to serve humanity by improving health,” says Jeffrey Molter, associate vice president for health sciences communications at Emory University. “Joe has worked with all types of top tier news media, including his recent work for the CDC during the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic, where he served as principal public affairs advisor for the chief health officer for press conferences, interviews and Congressional testimony.”

Quimby earned a bachelor’s degree in communications from Brigham Young University and a master’s in strategic studies and national security from the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. He is a native of Pittsburgh, and currently resides in Kennesaw, Ga.
