Graduating Medical Students Learn Their Future at Match Day at Emory and Across the U.S.

ATLANTA - Graduating medical students at Emory University School of Medicine experienced their "rite of passage" today when they discovered where their careers as doctors will begin.

More than 100 Emory students gathered at noon for the highly anticipated Match Day ceremony, joining approximately 16,000 medical school seniors who applied for residency positions at U.S. teaching hospitals through the National Residency Match Program (NRMP) that annually matches students with residency programs.

Of the 128 Emory graduating seniors, 125 participated in the NRMP.  Forty students will spend all or part of their residencies in the State of Georgia and 39 will remain in Emory's affiliated residency training programs in either or both of their first or second years.

Some of the most popular specialties chosen by Emory's graduating seniors included Internal Medicine, General Surgery and Pediatrics. In addition to Emory, their training will be at other prestigious institutions such as Yale, Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Duke and Stanford.

The Match was established in 1952, at the request of medical students, to provide a fair and impartial transition to the graduate medical education experience. A computer is used to match the preferences of applicants with the preferences of residency programs in order to fill the available training positions at teaching hospitals across the United States.

Each year, approximately 16,000 graduates from U.S. medical schools, along with 15,000 graduates from osteopathic or foreign medical schools, compete for approximately 24,000 residency positions at U.S. hospitals.
