ATLANTA - Three Emory nurses were honored this year by the March of Dimes for excellence in nursing care during its Nurse of the Year awards ceremony hosted by Grady Health System.

More than 450 individuals attended the second annual event that recognized nurses who embody leadership, compassion and excellence in patient care across all specialties, and 16 nurses were honored, including:

Debra Barker, Emory Healthcare
Category: Critical Care

Judy Gretz, Emory Healthcare
Category: Women’s Health

Judith Wold, Emory University Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing
Category: Public Health

“From the patient bedside, to the classrooms as instructors of tomorrow’s nursing leaders, Emory nurses embody the truest spirit of care, compassion, discovery and training,” says Susan Grant, MS, RN, FAAN, chief nursing officer for Emory Healthcare. “We are all proud of Debra, Judy and Judith for not only representing Emory University and Emory Healthcare so very well, but for being solid role models for many other.”

"The Nurse of the Year awards honor nurses in Atlanta who are truly committed to the nursing profession and improving the health of their patients," says Linda A. McCauley, PhD, RN, FAAN, dean of Emory's School of Nursing. "We are proud to salute these Emory nurses, who have each had a profound impact on the health care delivery system."

The Nurse of the Year selection committee reviewed hundreds of applications across 16 categories ranging from Home Health and Palliative Care to NICU and Critical Care disciplines.  Nearly 200 finalists emerged, all representing the March of Dimes vision for a healthier, stronger generation of babies and families.

“Nurses play an incredibly critical role in our community.  They are truly unsung medical heroes of the healthcare field and we join the world in saluting them,” says Sheila Ryan, March of Dimes State Director.
