Fourth Southeastern Mycobacterial Meeting to be Held at Emory Jan. 13-14

The fourth Southeastern Mycobacterial Meeting (SEMM) will be held on Jan. 13-14, 2012 at Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health, Claudia Nance Rollins Building. The SEMM meetings, first launched in 2005, help establish working relationships among laboratories studying diverse aspects of mycobacterial biology, tuberculosis and HIV/tuberculosis co-infection in the Southeast.

This year’s meeting is co-sponsored by the Emory Vaccine Center, the Emory Center for AIDS Research, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Cellestis/QuantiferonTB, and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the National Institutes of Health.

The meeting will include approximately 100 faculty, students and postdoctoral fellows engaged in basic, clinical and translational research in medicine and public health at universities and research institutes throughout the Southeast.

Eminent tuberculosis researcher Eric Rubin, MD, PhD, professor of immunology and infectious diseases at the Harvard School of Public Health, will deliver the keynote address. Michael Iademarco, MPH, MD, chief, Laboratory Branch, Division of Tuberculosis Elimination at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, will discuss the global burden of tuberculosis from the public health perspective.

The meeting also will feature posters and oral presentations selected from submitted abstracts and will highlight presentations from student and postdoctoral researchers.
